The key marks
Grey warbler with a neat cap: black on the male, red-brown on the female. Marsh and Willow Tit have a black cap and a black bib.
Voice
A rich, fluting song that ends loud and clear; call a hard 'tek'.
Good to know
Blackcaps from Central Europe have started to winter in Britain and the Netherlands instead of Spain, helped by garden feeders.
Do not confuse with
Compare it with the Marsh Tit. Look at the marks above one by one rather than the overall colour, and practise telling the two apart with real photos.
Where and when
You can expect to find it in woodland, parks and gardens with undergrowth. Distribution changes with the seasons and from year to year, so check a recent local observation source before you go looking.
