The key marks

A stocky finch with a black cap, a stout black bill, a grey back and a white rump. The male has a rosy-red breast.

Voice

A soft, piping whistle, “peu”.

Good to know

It feeds on the buds of fruit trees in spring, which has made it unpopular with orchard owners.

Where and when

You can expect to find it in woodland edges, hedgerows and gardens. Distribution changes with the seasons and from year to year, so check a recent local observation source before you go looking.
