The key marks

Grey bird with a black cap, a yellow bill and a bare yellow patch behind the eye. Red Wattlebird is streaked brown-grey with a red wattle and a yellow belly patch.

Voice

Loud, piping 'pwee-pwee' calls, given by many birds together.

Good to know

It lives in groups and aggressively chases and mobs other birds, even larger ones, from its territory.

Do not confuse with

Compare it with the Red Wattlebird. Look at the marks above one by one rather than the overall colour, and practise telling the two apart with real photos.

Where and when

You can expect to find it in open woodland, parks and gardens. It is especially common in Australia. Distribution changes with the seasons and from year to year, so check a recent local observation source before you go looking.
