The key marks

A tit with a black hood, white cheek patch, grey back, white underparts and a broad black stripe down the belly. Great Tit has a green back and yellow underparts.

Voice

A ringing whistled phrase repeated several times.

Good to know

It nests in tree holes, wall cavities and banks, and often joins mixed flocks of small birds.

Do not confuse with

Compare it with the Great Tit. Look at the marks above one by one rather than the overall colour, and practise telling the two apart with real photos.

Where and when

You can expect to find it in open woodland, gardens and farmland. It is especially common in Japan and China. Distribution changes with the seasons and from year to year, so check a recent local observation source before you go looking.
