The key marks

Male has a grey crown, black face and back, bright orange belly, rump and tail and a white patch on the wing. Black Redstart male is sooty black and grey with a rusty tail and lacks the orange belly and grey crown.

Voice

Soft 'tik-tik' calls and a short, thin warbling song.

Good to know

It perches in the open on low posts and shivers its orange tail.

Do not confuse with

Compare it with the Black Redstart. Look at the marks above one by one rather than the overall colour, and practise telling the two apart with real photos.

Where and when

You can expect to find it in open woodland, scrub and villages. It is especially common in China. Distribution changes with the seasons and from year to year, so check a recent local observation source before you go looking.
