The key marks

A bright yellow rump patch that flashes in flight, and a yellow patch on each side of the chest. Pine Siskin is streaked brown with yellow wing marks.

Voice

A hard 'chek'.

Good to know

It is one of few warblers that can digest the wax of bayberries, so it winters farther north.

Do not confuse with

Compare it with the Pine Siskin. Look at the marks above one by one rather than the overall colour, and practise telling the two apart with real photos.

Where and when

You can expect to find it in woods and thickets. It is especially common in Mexico, the United States, California and Canada. Distribution changes with the seasons and from year to year, so check a recent local observation source before you go looking.
