Learn to recognise birds of the Netherlands

Explore birds of the Netherlands and practise with real photographs. Start with familiar surroundings, then choose a regional or seasonal guide.

Start close to home

A garden, street, park or waterside is a manageable starting point. Learn to separate a few species first. The photographs below show Blue Tit, Great Tit and European Robin as examples, rather than a complete list or a report of current sightings.

Let the habitat shape your selection

Which birds you may encounter depends on the surroundings. Choose a Netherlands guide in Lore and find a smaller collection that fits your interests. Common birds, a single family and a trip guide are different starting points.

Consider the season

A regional list does not mean every species is present at every time of year. Lore shows occurrence and seasonal information where available. Check a recent observation source when you want to know whether a particular bird has been reported at a location.

Practise a manageable set

Look through a few new birds before playing a short round within your guide. If two species are confusing, open both and compare a concrete feature. The original regional page also links to existing species information and practice.
