Identifying winter birds in the Netherlands

Practise identifying birds in winter. Consider flocks, light and plumage, and choose a Netherlands or seasonal practice guide in Lore.

Winter is a context, not a separate species group

Here, winter birds means birds you may encounter in the Netherlands during winter. That includes species present in other seasons too. A seasonal guide limits your practice collection; it does not guarantee each species occurs in your garden.

Look through the whole flock

Great Tits and Blue Tits may move together in autumn and winter. Check individual birds rather than assuming every member of a flock belongs to the species you recognised first. Look at the head and compare the photographs below.

Allow for difficult conditions

A dark day, backlighting or an obscured head can make colour less helpful. Look for several clues from your observation point. Stay cautious about an uncertain name and avoid disturbing a bird to obtain a better view.

Choose focused practice

Open your Netherlands guide and, where available, choose a season or smaller collection. Compare an incorrect answer with the correct species, then try another photograph. Regional information provides background rather than current local sightings.
